Enola Holmes

 Sherlock Holmes Teenage Sister

Enola Holmes is a adaptation of The Nancy Springer Book Series "The Enola Holmes Mysteries". The story about Enola Holmes (Sherlock Holmes teenage sister) goes to London in search of her mother who dissapeared. Released on September 23th, 2020. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Which is one of my favorite actress, I love her since Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes also serving as a producer on the film. And there is Henry Caviil as Sherlock Holmes, Sam Claffin as Mycroft Holmes. Directed by Harry Bradbeer, from a screenplay by Jack Throne.

Unlike the ideal Victorian lady of late 19th century British society that embroiders cushions and reads romance novels, Enola's specialties lie in jiu-jitsu, tennis, and chemical explosions, all skills acquired courtesy of her free-thinking feminist mother, Eudoria Holmes.

"Enola when you spells it backward, it's alone."

Although Sherlock never visits home, Enola diligently collects newspaper clippings about his cases. When Eudoria inexplicably dissapears in the morning, Sherlock and Mycroft return to their estate, surprised to find their sister without traditional education, let alone governess. Without her mother, Enola's future lies in Mycroft's hands.

What begins as a laser-focused search for her mother turns into something with much greater implications when she meets fellow runaway Lord Viscount Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge). Then someone trying to kill her and find her. When Enola navigates the streets of London and countryside disguised as either a boy or an equally unlikely corset, switching courses several times while on a mission to right other's wrong.

Enola  as young woman refuses to comply with society's assigned gender roles, whether be marrying a man or wearing an itchy hat. Though there is an abundance of stories set in the late 19th century, rarely do viewers see a strong, disobedient woman in search of something greater than courtship (and who doesnt end up getting married anyway because they finally met the "right" man).

Back to the story, Mycroft's control over her future to institutions barring woman from entering, examples of institutionalized inequality are scattered troughout the film. The most blatantly topic is when Eudoria's friend, a Black Feminish named Edith (Susie Wokoma) points out Sherlock's privilege as a wealthy white man mid way through the film.

In the end, while many of Sherlock's cases are known for being multi-faceted and impossible for anyone aside from the famous detective to figure out, his sister's first attempt at solving a crime is fairly straightforward and easy to follow.

Between Enola and Tewkesbury there is a little interaction, from annoyance to admiration, though their potential romance is not meant to be at the forefont of the plot. Over all I still love it. I rated this film 7/10 because It's worth to watch it with family, funny and you will think "How could she think that way?" She's a genius just like her brother. Holmes family is just amazing. I think from now I will follow the series of Sherlock Holmes.

In my opinion, the mystery in this film is less pronounced, more like Enola problems than solved cases. I also cried when Enola and her mother finally met, I wonder it must be hard living in that era fight for woman's right. Even though this story is fiction, imagine a previous hero like RA Kartini who was a leading feminist woman emancipation in Indonesia. She was very concerned of education in Indonesia especially for woman. Because of her concerns, she found a school only for woman in Indonesia.
